Fox who stowed away on ship from UK to New York ‘settling in well’ at Bronx home

A stowaway fox who took a transatlantic trip to New York after slipping onto a cargo ship from Southampton is “settling in well” to his new home at the Bronx Zoo.

The zoo said the 11-pound (5-kilogram) male fox, who is thought to be about two years old, appears healthy after early examinations.

“He seems to be settling in well,” Keith Lovett, the zoo’s director of animal programs, adding: “It’s gone through a lot.”

The ship loaded with cars left Southampton on February 4, according to the zoo, arriving in February 18 at the Port of New York and New Jersey.

The species, formally named Vulpes vulpes, is widespread in Europe, Asia, North America and parts of Africa. A long-term home for this fox will be found once he clears some more health screening.

He is currently being cared for at the zoo’s veterinary centre, where he is enjoying a diet of proteins and some biscuit-like items.
