Five people injured in Amsterdam stabbing attack, police say

One person has been arrested, but the motive remains unclear.

At least five people have been injured in a stabbing near Dam Square in central Amsterdam.

Amsterdam Police confirmed: “In a stabbing incident at the Sint Nicolaasstraat nearby the Dam square five people have been injured. One suspect has been arrested.

“A motive is currently still unclear, but part of our investigation,” the force said in a post on social media.

The area has been cordoned off, and multiple ambulances have responded to the event.

Police have confirmed a knife-wielding assailant was among five people seriously wounded.

Video posted on social media shows a trauma helicopter landing on the square in front of the Royal Palace.

Local media reported that a city council meeting involving Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema was interrupted because of the stabbing.

Police are urging people to share any footage of the incident with them.
