A British couple celebrating their honeymoon were killed alongside their pilot in a helicopter crash on a Greek island, according to local media.

The private helicopter crashed on the popular Greek tourist island of Sifnos on Monday, killing all three people on board.

The crash sparked a fire in the Tholos part of Sifnos, the fire department said, and three bodies were recovered from the site.

SKAI, a major Greek TV network and media group, said the helicopter took off from Markopoulo, near Athens, and was scheduled to arrive in Sifnos at 6.15pm.

The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.

The UK Foreign Office told ITV News: “We are in contact with the local authorities and are urgently seeking further information.

“Our staff stand ready to provide consular support to those affected.”
