British father charged over son's death in Cyprus allowed to go home for funeral

A British father charged with negligence over the death of his three-year-old son in Cyprus has been told he can fly home to attend the funeral.

The 37-year-old man, who has not yet been identified, is expected to fly home on Wednesday.

His lawyer, Alexandros Alexandrou, said the court lifted all travel restrictions imposed on his client for a month.

The order expires September 15, when the 37-year-old man is due back in Cyprus to answer charges against him. If he doesn’t return on that date, a European arrest warrant will be issued against him, Alexandrou said.

The man and his family were reportedly just a few days into a holiday in the Cypriot resort town of Paphos last month when his son fell from a fourth-floor hotel window. The circumstances of the fall remain unclear.

The man was arrested and charged, but a court later released him from custody on the condition that he surrender his passport, report to a police station weekly and pay a €20,000 (around £17,100) bond.

Whilst in the UK, the 37-year-old will also complete paperwork in relation to the death of his child.
