Multiple bread-based products including sandwiches, wraps and baguettes have been recalled over fears they could cause meningitis.

Bread Spread, who specialise in handmade products, are recalling various chilled and ready to eat foods because of the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in some of the foods.

All pack sizes of Bread Spread Ready to Eat Food Products, Orbital Foods Ready to Eat Food Products and Perfect Bite Ready to Eat Food Products with dates up to and including May 18 are not to be consumed.

Symptoms caused by the bacteria can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle aches or pain, chills, vomiting and diarrhoea.

In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications such as meningitis.

People over the age of 65, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and immunocompromised people are more vulnerable to listeria infections.

Customers are being urged not to eat the foods and return all affected products to the store in which they were purchased for a full refund.

A notice from Bread Spread said: “Bread Spread are recalling all chilled and ready to eat foods under the brand names ‘Bread Spread’, ‘Orbital Foods’ and ‘Perfect Bite’ including sandwiches, wraps, baguettes, twists, french sticks and torpedoes with a range of fillings due to the detection of listeria monocytogenes in final products.”

For more information, customers are asked to contact breadspread2501@gmail.com.
