Aldi has announced the release of its new wine collection with a twist – they’ll be sold in paper bottles.

The German company said it will become the first supermarket in the UK to ditch glass for paper when its new own-brand wines launch in two weeks.

The budget supermarket chain will sell Cambalala South African Shiraz and Cambalala South African Sauvignon Blanc across its stores from March 18 to coincide with global recycling day.

Both will cost £7.99 for 75cl bottles.

According to Aldi, by replacing glass bottles with paper, the firm has generated a carbon footprint reduction that is the “equivalent to driving around the planet 5.8 times”.

The bottles are made from 94% recycled paperboard and are lined with a food-grade pouch to contain the wine.

They are fully recyclable, shatterproof and five times lighter than a standard glass bottle.

The new collection was made with the sustainable packaging company Frugalpac.

According to the business, Scotland became the first country in the world to sell paper wine bottles in 2020 after its own alcohol hit stores in Edinburgh, Bridge of Allan and Inverness.
