A Gatwick-bound plane exploded when it crashed shortly after take-off on Thursday, killing all but one of the 242 people on board.
The Air India flight AI 171 departed from Ahmedabad Airport five minutes before it crashed into a residential area after taking off at 1.38pm local time.
At least 270 people were killed in the incident, including several people on the ground.
No Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft had crashed before Thursday’s incident.
Here, ITV News looks at what is known about those who were on board.
Who were the passengers on board?
A total of 242 passengers and crew were on board at the time of the crash. Among the passengers were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British, one Canadian and seven Portuguese.
Vishwash and Ajay Kumar Ramesh

The British national from Leicester is the sole survivor of the plane crash. He was travelling with his brother Ajay Kumar Ramesh.
Mr Ramesh was in seat 11A, next to one of the aircraft’s emergency exits.
In an interview with DD News from a hospital bed, he said: “It all happened before my eyes. I can’t believe how I came out alive. For a short period, I thought I was going to die too, but when my eyes opened I saw
I was alive.”
His brother, Nayankumar Ramesh, has told ITV News of the family’s shock after they received a call from him shortly after the plane crashed.
“When the plane crashed, he called my dad, saying the plane had crashed, and I’m not sure how I made it out. He was confused. He couldn’t see our other brother,” he said.
Arjun Patoliya

Two children were orphaned when Arjun Patoliya was killed in the Air India plane crash after travelling to scatter his wife’s ashes in her homeland, according to a fundraiser for the family.
Mr Patoliya, 37, was killed 18 days after his wife Bharti had died from cancer, the GoFundMe page to support their daughters, aged four and eight, said.
The Briton had travelled to Gujarat to fulfil his wife’s “final wish”. As of Saturday evening more than £400,000 had been raised to help the girls.
The fundraiser, organised by Mr Patoliya’s colleague, said: “Arjun left to bid farewell to his wife, never returned to the children they both raised.
“Now, these two beautiful young girls have been left without parents — their world turned upside down in just over two weeks.”
Mr Patoliya worked at furniture manufacturer Inspired Elements Ltd, based in Stanmore, north-west London.
Panna Nagar

Former nursery headteacher and Ofsted inspector Panna Nagar held her family together “with her warmth and wisdom”, her family have said.
A social media post signed from her four grandchildren said: “Her work in education and numerous charities brought her around the world, her legacy is undoubtedly immense and she touched so many lives with her passion.
“She created an international community through her care for people and a desire to bring education to everyone. Her impact will be remembered indefinitely.
“She poured an endless amount of love, passion and care into everything that she did”, her grandchildren said.
For 15 years from 2005, Ms Nagar headed Northfleet Nursery School in Gravesend, Kent.
In a statement, the school said she was “more than just an educator she was a guiding light, an inspiration and a champion for every child and staff member lucky enough to walk through her doors”.
Jayshreeben Patel

Jayshreeben Patel, 23, had left her family behind to begin a new life in London with the husband she had married just two months ago.
As her family waited outside a hospital in Ahmedabad to receive her remains, Ms Patel’s cousin, Vinay Patel, told ITV News: “She was really kind, really popular and down to earth.
“She was the pride of her community… We’re heartbroken that we have lost such an amazing woman.”
Manjuben Maheshbhai Patel

79-year-old Manjuben Maheshbhai Patel was on her way back to the UK to continue her volunteer work at a Hindu Temple in Queensbury, North West London.
Volunteers there said she will be a huge loss to the community.
Hardik Avaiya and Vibhooti Patel

27-year-old Hardik and his new fiance Vibhooti, who was 28, were in India planning their wedding and meeting eachothers families.
The couple lived in Leicester and were volunteers at the Shree Hanuman Temple.
Their friend Bharvik Vaghani who was due to pick them up from the airport told ITV News “no one can believe it.”
Renjitha Gopakumaran Nair

Tributes are being paid to nurse and mother of two Renjitha Gopakumaran Nair.
She was working in the UK while her family lived in the state of Kerala, and was planning on returning after her job at the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth ended.
In a statement, the Chief Nurse at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust said: “Renjitha was a much loved and valued member of our nursing team and this news has been a shock to all.
“We are all so grateful to have had the opportunity to know and work with her. Our thoughts are with Renjitha’s family and friends at this time.”
Dirdh Patel

Indian national Dirdh Patel, 22, was studying for Artificial Intelligence at the University of Huddersfield.
His family friend, Raj Kaur, has told ITV News Calendar Mr Patel had returned to India to ask his girlfriend’s family for permission to marry her.
He was living in Leeds with his brother and sister-in-law after he came to the UK to study for a masters degree.
Ms Kaur said: “He was so incredibly bright, softly spoken, just a wonderful person. It’s a huge shock, really awful. It’s so heartbreaking because he was so excited to be coming back and set up a life for himself.”
Adam and Hasina Taju and Altaf Patel

72-year-old Adam Taju and his wife Hasina, 70, who lived in Newham, East London, were celebrating Eid with their family in India.
The day before their flight they’d been on a video call with their son. Their son Altaf Taju told ITV News they were excited to get home to him and their grandchildren
Iqbal Hussain has lived next door with Adam and Hasina for forty years. He told ITV News, “I was a young child when I moved in the house, they’ve seen me grow, I’m devestated to hear the news.”
The couple were travelling with their 51-year-old son-in-law Altaf Husen Ismail Patel.
Heer and Dhir Baxi

Sisters Heer and Dhir Baxi, both in their early 20s, were returning home to London after surprising their grandmother for her birthday.
Speaking to the PA news agency, Ishan Baxi, a cousin who lives in Ahmedabad, said both women had an “amazing aura” and wanted to “roam the world”.
He said: “I am unable to control my tears even now also just because I was close to them, you just imagine what emotions parents are going through right now and think about guilt the grandma would feel right now.
“I just want God to bless those souls, all dreams, promises, aspirations vanished in seconds.”
Heer worked as a product manager and loved statistics and finance, while Dhir was a fashion designer who had studied in Paris, their cousin said.
Javed and Mariam Ali Syed

Mariam Ali Syed, along with her husband Javed and the couple’s two young children, Zayn, five, and Amani, four, were returning home from a holiday in India.
Mariam’s sister-in-law Yasmine Hassan confirmed that they were on board.
Mariam, 35, had worked for almost a decade as a brand ambassador at Harrods.
Raxa and Rudra Modha and Yasha Kamdar

A widow who died alongside two members of family on the crashed Air India flight was returning to the UK after her husband’s funeral.
Raxa Modha, her toddler grandson Rudra Modha, and daughter-in-law Yasha Kamdar, from Northamptonshire, were on the flight.
Mrs Modha had been in India for the cremation of her late husband, Kishor Modha, who had died from cancer in April.
The mayor of Wellingborough, Raj Mishra called for people to come together as he announced their deaths.
A prayer service will be held in Wellingborough at the Sanatan Hindu Mandir Community Centre on Friday night.
Akeel Nanabawa and Hannaa Vorajee

Welsh Businessman Akeel Nanabawa was on the flight with his wife, Hannaa Vorajee and their daughter Sara.
It is understood that Mr Nanabawa grew up in Newport, and Ms Vorajee was originally from Warwickshire, and the family lived together in Gloucestershire.
A community leader supporting the family said: “The news of this tragic incident has left us devastated, and we are still coming to terms with the enormity of what has happened.
“This young family was incredibly close-knit — devoted parents and their beautiful young daughter. They were compassionate, active members of the community who regularly volunteered at our local Islamic school and for various local projects.”
Fiongal and Jamie Greenlaw-Meek

A married couple from London are believed to be among those killed in the Air India crash after they posted a video of themselves in the airport talking about their trip.
Fiongal and Jamie Greenlaw-Meek, who later lived in Ramsgate, ran a spiritual wellness centre and yoga studio. They spoke of their love of India and the “mind-blowing” experiences they had on their trip, before they boarded the flight.
Fiongal appeared on ITV’s This Morning to showcase their wellness brand last month and had previously travelled to India.
Dr Prateek Joshi and Dr Komi Vyas
Dr Komi Vyas had recently quit her job at the Udaipur Hospital to join her husband, Dr Prateek Joshi, in London to start a new life with their three children.
A final smiling selfie was taken by Dr Joshi showing the couple with their children on board the plane.
Former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani
The former chief minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani, was confirmed to be among those killed in Thursday’s crash by Sambit Patra, a lawmaker from Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
He was the 16th chief minister of the region and held the office from 2016 to 2021.
In a social media post, Modi called the crash “heartbreaking beyond words” and said, “my thoughts are with everyone affected”.
Who was among the crew?
The crew consisted of ten members of cabin crew, the pilot and a co-pilot. The pilot is understood to have had 8,200 hours of flying experience, and the co-pilot 1,100 hours.
