Pope Francis – who has died aged 88 – was spiritual leader of the Roman Catholic Church for 12 years.
The pontiff passed away on Easter Monday at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.
Francis, who was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1936, ushered in a new era of leadership in the Roman Catholic Church when he was elected Pope in 2013.
He was the first Pope from the Americas or the Southern Hemisphere and was also the first Jesuit to be elected to the throne of St Peter.
