Youths launched fireworks onto a football pitch as a local derby was taking place in Clydebank, in what the club described as a “blight on football”.
Play was abandoned early into the KDM Evolution Trophy match between Clydebank and Dumbarton FC on Tuesday when fireworks were launched onto the pitch.
Pyrotechnics directed from the Glasgow Road area flew over Holm Park close to where players were standing before the referee temporarily stopped the game.
It was the first time the two sides have met since 2001, with Clydebank running out 4-0 winners.
@byrichardcatoPolice confirmed there were no injuries or damage reported, but that enquiries are ongoing to trace the youths involved.
A Clydebank club spokesperson said it condemns all forms of anti-social behaviour.
A statement read: “While the fireworks were visible from inside the ground, they were set off outside Holm Park. Police, SIA-trained security staff and club volunteers responded quickly and tried to identify those responsible.
“The club made every effort to provide a safe environment for everyone attending. Both clubs issued pre-match communications setting out expectations of supporter conduct. There was an increased security presence. There were police in attendance. The match passed without incident inside the ground.
“The vandalism also recently seen around the town is entirely unacceptable. Damaging property and causing fear and disruption in our community is not in our name and will never be associated with this club.
“So-called ‘young teams’ causing destruction and disorder is a growing problem for clubs across the country. They are a blight on football and our local communities. These are not supporters. Their behaviour has nothing to do with football, and those wishing to act this way are simply not welcome at Clydebank FC.
“If you experienced or witnessed anti-social behaviour or vandalism around the fixture, please report it directly to Police Scotland, along with any footage or information that could help their ongoing enquiries.
“Thank you to everyone who attended responsibly and helped make it a great occasion.”
Chief Inspector Lynn Edwards said: “Enquiries are ongoing to trace youths who launched fireworks in the Glasgow Road area of Clydebank on the evening of Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
“One of the fireworks landed on the pitch of Holm Park, causing the football match between Clydebank and Dumbarton to be temporarily stopped.
“There were no injuries or damage reported.
“Ongoing high-visibility patrols will continue in the area to deter further antisocial behaviour as the Bonfire Night period approaches.”
