A young mum who lost her leg after being struck by a dangerous driver is suing him for £1m.
In 2021, Kerrie Lavery was crossing a road in Clydebank with friend Alanah Boyle when they were struck by a BMW driven by Thomas Granger, who was driving at 81mph in a 40mph zone.
Granger carried on driving until he doubled back to revisit the scene, where he was asked to call an ambulance by Kerrie’s group of friends.
However when they realised he was the one who has struck the pair, Granger sped off and was later caught by police who found him sitting in his car.
In May, the 47-year-old from Glasgow was jailed for nearly three years at Dumbarton Sheriff Court for dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
The impact of the crash was so severe that 25-year-old Kerrie instantly lost her leg above the knee.
The young mum-of-one from Drumchapel endured gruelling surgery and physio treatments.
Meanwhile Alanah suffered a fractured pelvis, an injury to her right elbow and PTSD and has spent years trying to come to terms with the crash.
Following Granger’s conviction, Kerrie has now launched civil action for £1m, which would cover the cost of prosthetics for the rest of her life.
Kerrie’s lawyers Digby Brown also hope to recover compensation for the impact to her personal and working life, such as lost earnings.
A Digby Brown spokesman said: “For three years Kerrie has shown a strength few others can comprehend and she has shown remarkable resilience and positivity throughout her recovery.
“The loss of a limb is a truly life-changing injury and it is only right that an affected person gets the support, treatment and compensation they deserve – especially when that injury was the fault of someone else.
“This is why a court action has now been raised on Kerrie’s behalf and we will continue to support her to ensure she accesses the best care and most positive future possible.”
