Work to transform the famous Hielanman’s Umbrella at Glasgow Central Station has been paused by Network Rail.

The decision follows a review by the railway operator of the plans, which would have included multi-coloured shops and neon lights.

The historic landmark would have reportedly been given a 1950s-style makeover, with work due to start back in August 2025.

However, plans have now been “paused” with Network Rail working with the council to see what other options are available.

A spokesperson said: “Following a review, the original proposal for Hielanman’s Umbrella is currently paused.

“We remain in regular dialogue with Glasgow City Council and are exploring opportunities to take forward design and public realm elements in a future funding period.”

Hielanman’s Umbrella, also known as the Highlandsman’s Umbrella, was used as a meeting spot for Highlanders escaping the clearances when it opened back in 1879.

Glasgow City Council confirmed that the landmark’s future is being considered following the Union Street fire.

A spokesman said: “As part of the Central Station Area Study which was prompted by the major fire on Union Street in March, we will be reconsidering the future of the Hielanman’s Umbrella within that wider review.”

Despite plans being put on hold, Network Rail said works are continuing to improve the area.

A spokesperson added: “In the meantime, improvement works are ongoing, including upgraded lighting, enhanced cleaning and maintenance, and efforts to bring new tenants into vacant properties.

“We recognise the site’s cultural significance and are continuing to assess what elements of the original plans can be progressed within current budgets.”
