Two women who vandalised an event at Glasgow’s Botanic Gardens caused £8,000 in damages.
Eilidh McFadden, 22, and Orla Murphy, 23, spray-painted political slogans on ornaments used at GlasGlow on October 29, 2022.
The pair were later recorded and identified by CCTV after organisers Itison put the video on social media.
McFadden and Murphy pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to maliciously spray painting on various items.
The court heard the GlasGlow event that year was titled “The Land That Time Forgot”.
The event organisers had brought in items such as volcanos and dinosaurs to the Botanic Gardens.
On the morning of the incident, a CCTV review took place which saw McFadden, of Fort William, and Murphy, of Cork, on the premises.
Prosecutor Sean Docherty said: “They sprayed graffiti on signs, dinosaur skulls and projector screens.”
The slogans included, “F**** animal cruelty” and “Greta was here”.
The video of the vandalism was circulated on social media by the event organisers.
Mr Docherty stated that although the event was able to proceed, there was £8,000 worth of damages.
Both women were later traced by police and arrested.
Alison Miller, defending McFadden, told the court that her client is a student at the University of the Highlands and Islands.
The lawyer said: “At the time of the offence, she consumed alcohol and they had spray paint on them.
“They thought it would be funny to vandalise the property without appreciating the damage it would cause.”
Atlanta Jack, defending agriculture student Murphy, stated that the pair’s actions were “not politically motivated.”
It was revealed that both women received unpaid work for a previous breach of the peace offence.
Sentencing was deferred until March pending background reports by Sheriff Andrew McIntyre who granted the pair bail.
The sheriff said: “This is the second example of this having happened at a considerable cost to the owner of the property.
“I need to consider all options.”
