A woman has been taken to hospital as firefighters tackled a blaze at a block of flats in Inverclyde.

Emergency services were called around 5.55am on Tuesday to reports of a fire at a property on Cathcart Street in Greenock.

Images from the scene showed a large emergency services presence, including police and fire crews, with debris on the street from the blaze.

A burnt door could be seen, with a wall knocked down to allow crews access to a communal space.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service sent three appliances and one high-reach vehicle to the scene.

Police say a woman was taken to hospital to be checked over and enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire.

Fire crews left at around 8.24am, after ensuring the area was made safe, a spokesperson said.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 5.55am on Tuesday, August 25, we were called to a report of a fire at a property on Cathcart Street, Greenock.

“A woman was taken to hospital to be checked over.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire.”
