An “almost perfectly spherical” egg has been discovered in a Scottish supermarket.

A woman found the round egg in a box of 15 she bought while doing her weekly shop in Asda in Ayr.

Now the it is up for sale at Thomson Roddick Callan auction house.

Auctioneers hope there will be a scramble for the rare piece, beating a price tag of £480 that another round egg fetched.

Round eggs are said to be a 'one in a billion' occurrence.

David Miller, who works for the auction house, said that round eggs are thought to be a “one in a billion” occurrence, and previous auctions had seen similar items sell for hundreds.

He added that the egg’s best before date is August 20, so hopeful bidders will want to get in there quick.

The egg has been listed under lot 357 with an estimate suggesting shoppers will shell out between £50 and £80.

It will be available for bids on August 8 from 10am.
