A 79-year-old has died following a fire on Main Street, Barrhead, at around 4pm last Thursday.

A woman has died in hospital following a fire at a housing complex in East Renfrewshire.

Four appliances from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were called to a housing complex on Main Street, Barrhead, at around 4pm on Thursday, April 25.

The fire was safely extinguished and a 79-year-old woman was taken to Royal Alexandra Hospital for treatment, where she died the following day.

Her next of kin have been made aware.

Enquiries remain ongoing, however early inquiries indicate the fire was not deliberate.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “We received a report of a fire at a premises on Main Street, Barrhead, around 4pm on Thursday, April 25, 2024.

“Emergency services attendance and a 79-year-old woman was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital, where she died on Friday, April 26, 2024. Her next of kin are aware.

“Enquiries are ongoing, however the fire is not being treated as wilful. A report was submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
