A woman has died after a fire engulfed a building in a seaside town in Ayrshire.

Firefighters were called to the public toilet at Melbourne Park, on Melbourne Road in Saltcoats on Monday at around 10.40am.

Police said that the death was not thought to be suspicious but that investigations were ongoing.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 10.40am on Monday, November 15, to reports of a fire within a building in Melbourne Road, Saltcoats.

“Operations control immediately mobilised three fire engines and firefighters are extinguishing the fire.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A woman has died following a fire at a building on Melbourne Road, Saltcoats, on Monday, November 15, 2021.

“Enquiries are ongoing, however the death is not being treated as suspicious and a full report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”
