Windows smashed at Glasgow home during protest sparked by false sex crime claims online

Windows at a Glasgow home have been smashed during a protest after fake claims were made online that a sex crime had been committed at the property.

The crowd gathered outside the house on Yate Street on Wednesday, after social media posts claimed a man committed a sex act at the window on August 28.

Officers determined that the incident did not occur and that no crime was committed.

Following further misinformation on social media regarding the non-existent incident, a demonstration was organised.

The windows of the home were smashed, and the man living there was evacuated by officers for his safety.

Chief Inspector Hannah Edward has now urged members of the public to “behave responsibly” and not to believe that information shared online is “always accurate”.

She added: “I would urge the public to behave responsibly around social media, particularly with information being shared and the response to what is read or seen online.

“This information is not always accurate, and on this occasion, has resulted in property being damaged and someone being removed from their home for their safety.

“Enquiries are ongoing to identify those responsible for the vandalism, and anyone with information is urged to contact us via 101, quoting reference number 2890 of Wednesday, September 2, 2026.”
