A new weekly shipping service linking Greenock and Rotterdam is set to deliver a boost for Scotland’s independent whisky industry, according to port bosses.
Cargo ship BG Emerald called at the Port of Greenock on Friday, marking the launch of BG Freight Line’s regular connection to the Dutch city and its extensive network of shipping routes.
Peel Ports Group says the route could prove valuable to independent distillers in Scotland, as well as bottlers and their supply chains.
Jamie Strain, Clydeport port director, said: “We’re proud to welcome this important BG Freight Line service back to the Port of Greenock.
“This is a significant moment for Scottish exporters, who now have the certainty of a ship here every week to take their goods to Rotterdam and on to markets around the world.
“We’re also pleased with the level of initial interest we’ve had in this service, which will be particularly beneficial for independent whisky businesses given the current challenging market conditions.”
The launch follows an export roundtable held by Peel Ports earlier this year, at which cost, reliability, capacity and access to market emerged as common concerns among food and drink businesses.
The route will be served by MV BG Emerald and MV BG Jade, which will alternate on the weekly calls.
