Weather caused falling concrete from M8 Kingston Bridge with inspections ordered

A programme of “reactive inspections” is to be carried out on the Kingston Bridge after concrete fell from it on Monday.

Officers were called to Paisley Road West under the M8 in Glasgow at around 3am following reports of debris.

The road was closed while the concrete was cleared before being reopened.

Amey dispatched engineers to the site to inspect the area. The company identified “deterioration” caused by adverse weather.

Several inspections will be carried out to locate areas which may need maintenance.

A spokesperson for Amey, the company that maintains the south-west trunk road network on behalf of Transport Scotland, said: “Yesterday morning an Amey on-call structures engineer attended the site and inspected the affected area, allowing Paisley Road West to re-open.

“To ensure the integrity of the Kingston Bridge Complex structures and the safety of the public, which is paramount, Amey undertakes a series of routine inspections at varying frequencies each year.

“However recent adverse weather has caused deterioration that could not be previously identified. Following this incident, a programme of reactive inspections will be carried out across the structure. These inspections will inform future maintenance at this location if required.”

At the time of the incident a Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 3am on Monday, January 13, 2025, officers received a report of concrete having fallen from a bridge over Paisley Road West, Glasgow.

“The road was closed but has been cleared and reopened.”
