Footage shows the moment a large LED advertising screen collapsed during the huge fire in the heart of Glasgow.
Emergency services were called to Union Street at around 3.46pm on Sunday after the blaze spread to a 19th-century commercial building at the corner of Gordon Street and Union Street, causing “enormous damage” and the loss of the building’s dome.
More than 200 firefighters were involved in the incident, with 18 fire engines and a specialist resource deployed to the scene at the height of the fire.
The video shows bright flames bursting from the building’s windows and the LED screen on the roof displaying
The LED screen can be seen displaying an advert for clothing retailer TK Maxx with the phrase “Every Day Can Be Iconic” as smoke billows in front of it.
The screen begins to lean forward before crashing loudly into the building.
Software engineer Calvin Connaghan had walked along Union Street towards the Glasgow Film Theatre hours before the building was engulfed in flames.
While he waited with his girlfriend to meet James McAvoy ahead of the Hollywood stars’ directorial debut they noticed a “toxic smell” in the air.
Word spread that a building on Union Street caught fire. As they started to make their way back to the train station, Calvin noticed the large blaze.
The 30-year-old managed to capture the LED screen “collapse through the roof and burst through the windows”.
He told STV News: “It was like something out of a movie.
“You don’t get to witness anything on that scale regularly. It was quite shocking and sad.
“It didn’t set in how serious it was until the next day, and you see all the charred ruins, all the businesses affected.”
The onlooker watched as the fire spread “floor-by-floor” as the screen “flickered through its adverts”.
Calvin added: “The flames were as tall as the screen then it just fell forwards and through the roof.”
