Two male rabbits were found abandoned in recycling bins behind a retail park in Ayr.
The male rabbits were found just days apart by bin collectors at a retail park who alerted the Scottish SPCA.
One of the rabbits that was found required emegrency surgery due to injuries likely caused from fighting with another rabbit, the charity said.
The other rabbit, a white albino, was found dirty but otherwise alert and taken to an animal rescue centre.
Both animals are now “doing well” and recovering from their ordeal.
The SSPCA said these rabbits were “lucky” to have been found when they did, as the outcome could have been very different.
It urged people not to abandon their pets, saying: “there are always other options”.
Scottish SPCA inspector Caitlin Rea said: “We can’t stress enough that there is no excuse to abandon an animal. There are always other options.
“These rabbits were lucky to have been found when they did, as the outcome would have been very different.”
She continued: “The injury to the second rabbit would have likely been caused by fighting with another rabbit. We took him to the vet, and he needed emergency castrating surgery.
“Both are now doing well and recovering from their ordeal.”
Ms Rea added that anyone unable to care for their pets should contact the charity for advice.
“If anyone recognises these rabbits or has any information surrounding their circumstances, they should call our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
