Two houses have been targeted in deliberate fire attacks that caused around £500,000 worth of damage in Renfrewshire.

No one was injured in the incidents that took place in the Brookfield area of Johnstone on Friday night.

Police were called to the scene at Merchiston Oval at around 7.20pm after fires at two separate properties were reported.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue service were also in attendance and the flames were eventually extinguished.

Officers investigating the blaze, which is being treated as wilful, are now appealing for witnesses or any information that will help those find the people responsible.

Detective Sergeant Karen Boyd, of Paisley CID, said: “Our enquiries into the incident are ongoing and anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area around that time is urged to get in touch. 

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland via 101.”
