Two cats have been discovered abandoned on a slip road on a motorway.

The two female cats were found by a member of the public in a blue and white cat carrier at the side of the M74 on Sunday.

The felines were taken to the Scottish SPCA’s animal rescue and rehoming centre, where is was confirmed that neither cat was microchipped.

A spokesperson for the animal charity said they appreciate that the owner may have intended for the cats to be found but it that this was not “the correct way to give up a pet”.

An assistant manager at the centre said: “These cats were found in their blue and white cat carrier beside a slip road coming from Clydeside on the busy M74. A member of the public managed to pick up the carrier and bring the cats to one of our centres.

“Both cats are females but are unfortunately not microchipped.

“We appreciate that whoever left the cats may have intended for them to be found but this is not the correct way to give up a pet if you can no longer care for them.

“If anyone recognises these cats, or has any information about their circumstances, they should call our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
