Two adults and two children from Scotland are among five people who have died in a crash on the M6.

Cumbria Police officers were called to the incident at 4.04pm on Tuesday on the M6 heading north past Tebay Services involving a Skoda and a Toyota.

The driver of the Toyota, a man, a woman and two children from Glasgow were pronounced dead at the scene.

A third child in the Toyota was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with serious injuries.

The driver of the Skoda, a man from Cambridgeshire was also pronounced dead at the scene.

Cumbria Fire Service confirmed it sent four engines to the scene with the patient taken to hospital already extricated from the car prior to their arrival.

A Cumbria Police statement read: “The families of those involved are being supported by specially trained officers.

“The M6 Northbound full reopened in the early hours of this morning.

A statement from Cumbria Fire said: “At 4.40pm on October 15, 2024 four fire engines from Penrith, Kendal and Shap were mobilised to a road traffic collision on the M6 motorway involving two vehicles.

“Firefighters used two breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet.

“Five casualties confirmed fatal and one casualty extricated prior to the arrival of fire service and conveyed to hospital and crews remained in attendance for several hours.”
