A man who died after being seriously injured in a disturbance in Glasgow city centre will be “dearly, dearly missed”, a tribute has said.

Police were called to Royal Exchange Square, near the Duke of Wellington statue, around 3.05am on Sunday, following reports of the incident, which involved several men.

Daniel Colrain was found seriously injured and taken to hospital, where he died on Monday.

The Old Smiddy in Glasgow’s Southside, where Daniel worked as a bartender, has released a statement saying they are “heartbroken”.

The pub has also launched a fundraiser to help cover the costs of the 21-year-old’s funeral.

“We are completely heartbroken to share that our dear colleague and friend, Daniel, has passed away”, the statement reads.

”To know Daniel was to experience his warmth and kindness firsthand. Over the past three years at The Smiddy, he built wonderful friendships with every member of our staff and became a cherished part of our close-knit group.

“He knew all of our regulars by name, chatted with them for hours, and was a beloved presence in the community where he grew up.

“He brought so much light to our team and will be dearly, dearly missed. During this difficult time, we are raising funds to support Daniel’s family and assist with his funeral and memorial arrangements.

“If you are able to contribute or share this page, any support would be deeply appreciated. All of our thoughts, love, and condolences are with his family.”

Well-wishers have left tributes to Daniel, describing him as “an amazing man, funny and kind-hearted, a joy to be in his presence” and a “true friend and neighbour”.

Another regular customer said: “Daniel was a lovely big guy, not a bad bone in his body, just loved a laugh and a joke, and all the Smiddy regulars loved a chat and a laugh with him.”

Another added: “There can be no finer example of an absolutely decent and good-hearted human being than him. Will be dearly missed in the hearts of many people from those who knew him closely to those who had experienced his personality in passing while ordering a drink.

“An absolute ray of light and someone who will be dearly missed by all who knew him.”
