The music producer behind one of the most influential Scottish rock albums of all time has died.

Andrew Weatherall added the acid house strains to Primal Scream’s 1991 classic Screamadelica.

His blend of dance loops and samples created one of the seminal works of the 1990s.

His death at the age of 56 was announced by his publicist.

A statement read: “We are deeply sorry to announce that Andrew Weatherall, the noted DJ and musician, passed away in the early hours of this morning, Monday 17th February 2020, at Whipps Cross Hospital, London.

“The cause of death was a pulmonary embolism.

“He was being treated in hospital but unfortunately the blood clot reached his heart. His death was swift and peaceful.”

Weatherall’s remix work on Screamadelic earned the band a Mercury Prize in 1992.

The album, which regularly tops music industry polls, has sold more than three million copies to date.

The DJ and producer, who was born in Windsor, also worked with New Order and Happy Mondays.

Author Irvine Welsh said: “Absolutely distraught to hear this terrible news.

“Andrew was a long-time friend, collaborator and one of the most talented persons I’ve known. Also one of the nicest.

“Genius is an overworked term but I’m struggling to think of anything else that defines him.”

Mogwai frontman Stuart Braithwaite said on Twitter: “I’m really gutted to hear the awful news about Andrew Weatherall.

“His influence on music was incredible and he never stopped pushing forward when it’d have been easier to rest on his laurels.

“Most important, though, he was a great person. Rest in peace.”
