Tributes have been paid to a “kind” Glasgow city councillor who died following an illness.
The city’s SNP Group confirmed that councillor Kenny McLean had died on Wednesday.
In a statement shared to X, formerly known as Twitter, a spokesperson said councillor McLean had died after an illness “which he bore with his usual cheerfulness”.
Councillor McLean had been a member since 2007 when he was elected in Partick West Ward.
In the 2017 council elections, the councillor began to represent the ward Partick East/Kelvindale.
He also worked as city convenor for neighbourhoods, housing and public realm for Glasgow City Council.
The SNP Group described him as a “tireless campaigner for Scotland and social justice”.
“Kenny was a passionate supporter of Scottish independence, community-led housing associations, his ward Partick, his constituents and St Mirren,” a spokesperson said.
“He was no-nonsense, pragmatic, funny, kind and had absolute integrity. A friend to so many and he’ll be missed more than he’d ever have known.”
SNP MSP for Carrick, Cumnock & Doon Valley, Elena Whitham, responded to the post and shared condolences.
“I am so sorry to hear about Kenny’s passing. He was a great help to me when I was first elected in a by election,” she wrote.
“My thoughts are with all of you and his loved ones.”
Councillor Thomas Kerr also shared condolences on X, saying: “I am so sorry to hear of Kenny’s passing – he was a devoted local Councillor who was always cheerful and passionate.”
“Thinking of the entire SNP Group and his family,” he wrote.
