Tributes have been paid to an ‘inspiring’ restaurant founder who has died at the age of 56.

Akbar’s Restaurant Group confirmed their founder, Shabir Hussain, had died on Wednesday.

Mr Hussain launched the first Akbar’s restaurant in Bradford in 1995, which specialises in South Asian dishes, and went on to expand the chain in cities such as Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow.

Following his death, the restaurant group confirmed that all their sites would be closed from Wednesday and will reopen at 5pm on Friday.

In a statement shared to their social media channels, the restaurant group said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shabir Hussain, founder of Akbar’s Restaurant Group.

“All restaurants will now be closed and will reopen on Friday, October 18, at 5pm.

“Please remember Shabir Hussain in your prayers. May Allah (SWT) grant him the highest rank in Jannah and bring peace and strength to his family during this difficult time.”

The Asian Food and Restaurant Awards (AFRA) also expressed their “deep sorrow” in a statement shared on social media.

The team added that the ninth Asian Food and Restaurant Awards, which will take place in December, will be officially dedicated to Mr Hussain’s “life, achievements, and enduring contributions to the industry”.

In previous years, AFRA awarded him the Curry King of the Year, Role Model of the Year, and Restaurant Group of the Year.

Chairman Atta Haq, co-chair Maria Saroya, and the AFRA team shared a statement on social media:

“We are at a loss for words to describe the sadness we feel. Shabir Hussain was not only a close family friend but a source of motivation and dedication to everyone who knew him. His passing leaves a void that can never be filled,” she wrote.

“We will miss you, Shabir. Your legacy will live on in our hearts, and your contributions will continue to inspire generations to come.”
