A train station in Glasgow was flooded overnight as Storm Boelo brings widespread disruption across Scotland.

An image from Network Rail showed the rail line at Dalmarnock submerged in water, though the train operator said flood pumps had cleared the water by 11am.

Damage across Scotland’s railway included a flooded culvert at Craigendoran, fallen trees at Partick and damage to overhead wires at Bishopton.

An amber wind warning came into force at 9pm on Saturday and will remain in place until 9pm on Sunday, with only Orkney remaining under a yellow warning.

Storm Boelo brought gusts in excess of 80mph across Argyll, with wind speeds of 85mph recorded in Machrahanish.

The severe weather has also caused disruptions from fallen trees and flooding across the rail network.

Services south and west of Kilwinning in North Ayrshire stopped from 9pm on Saturday while further north the Oban and Mallaig lines closed from about 10pm.

On Sunday, the line between Kyle of Lochalsh and Achnashellach in the Highlands will be closed from the start of service, as well as the railway between Wick and Helmsdale.

At around 10.30am, the train operator said services between Glasgow Central and Kilmarnock may be delayed or revised due to a tree blocking the railway between Stewarton and Dunlop.

An hour later, ScotRail announced that services between Glasgow Queen Street and Alloa will be terminated at and started back from Stirling due to a tree blocking the railway.

ScotRail said speed restrictions are also expected across much of the network from late Saturday night and throughout Sunday, with the potential for restrictions to remain in place on the line between Inverness and Wick into Monday morning.

These restrictions mean trains will operate at lower speeds than normal, resulting in longer journey times, delays and possible cancellations.

ScotRail has advised people to check before travelling and to consider alternative arrangements where possible.

“Storm Boelo continues to cause significant disruption across Scotland’s railway, with several routes across the country still closed,” ScotRail said in a social media post on Sunday afternoon.

“On routes that are open, our advice remains to only travel if necessary. If you do need to travel, please check your entire journey before setting off and allow plenty of extra time. Speed restrictions are in place across the network and services may be subject to delays or further changes.”

The rail operator said people with tickets for travel on Sunday can use it to travel on Monday at no extra cost if they would prefer to postpone their journey.
