Time Capsule to be given £2.5m modern makeover

The much-loved Time Capsule leisure complex is set for major upgrades as part of a £2.5 million makeover.

North Lanarkshire Council have announced plans to update the facilities at the Coatbridge-based centre.

The Time Capsule, which opened in 1991, currently includes a water park, a soft play area, a gym and an ice rink.

Council bosses have now given the go-ahead for a makeover, including a new themed tipping bucket attraction, modern health suites, an indoor Clip ‘n Climb arena, upgraded changing facilities, improved pool surrounds, a new community space overlooking the ice rink and enhancements to the soft play area.

There are also plans to replace the popular water flumes, Storm Chasers and Tornado Tantrum, later this year.

A council spokesperson said the flumes had “come to the end of their operational life”.

The waterpark will be closed while part of the building’s roof is removed to install the flumes. The works will take place during the winter months when the centre is quieter.

The leisure centre recently hit the headlines after plans were drafted to replace the ice rink, which is well-used by three hockey teams, synchronised skating and figure skating clubs.

It would have been replaced by a soft play area and a padel court before plans were scrapped following strong public opposition.

A petition was created to fight the plans and gained more than 14,000 signatures, leading to a change in direction.

“These exciting improvements will enhance the experience for everyone who visits, while creating modern, accessible facilities that encourage more people to be active and enjoy everything the venue has to offer.”
