Three teenage girls have been charged in connection with a fire in a former church in Ayr.

The former Morrison Congregational Church on the town’s George Street went on fire on Saturday night and emergency services were called to the scene.

Firefighters tackled the blaze, first reported around 8pm, and nobody was injured in the incident in the category C listed building.

The teenagers, aged 14, 16 and 18-years-old, were arrested and charged in relation to the blaze and are due to appear in court.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8pm on Saturday, May 29, we received a report of a fire at a building on George Street in Ayr.

“Emergency services attended and the fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. No one was injured in the incident.

“Three teenage girls, aged 18, 16 and 14-years-old have been arrested and charged in connection with the fire. They are due to appear at court at a later date.”
