Weapons seized and three arrested after city centre bomb scare sparks evacuations

A controlled explosion has been carried out after Glasgow Caledonian University and Buchanan Bus Station were evacuated over a bomb scare.

Police are understood to have recovered offensive weapons at the scene. The incident is not currently being treated as terrorism, STV News understands.

The Royal Navy bomb squad were on the scene with a large area of the city centre sealed off.

Police Scotland said officers were called after a suspicious item was found at around 1.10pm.

Surrounding roads have been closed and members of the public have been urged to avoid the area. The slip road onto the M8 at Junction 16 was shut, however, it has since reopened.

SPT announced that Buchanan Bus Station had closed at 1.50pm on Wednesday.

A large cordon was erected around the station after it was evacuated and the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were on the scene.

Killermont Street, between West Nile Street and North Hanover Street, and Cowcaddens Road, between Port Dundas Road and North Hanover Street, have been shut.

Glasgow Caledonian University, on Cowcaddens Road, told students and staff it had been requested to evacuate.

An email to students said: “Due to an ongoing incident in Buchanan Street Bus Station which is contained, we’ve been requested to evacuate campus immediately as a precaution.

“Please take your personal belongings with you.

“There is no access to Cowcaddens Road. Staff and students must leave via North Hanover Street, Dobbies Loan, or Milton Street.”

Police Scotland has confirmed that a controlled explosion was carried out at the scene and that nothing suspicious was found.

Three men have been arrested in connection with the incident and the possession of offensive weapons. An investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing.

Officers are now working to ensure the area is returned to normal.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Three men have been arrested following an incident at Buchanan Bus Station in Glasgow on Wednesday, 20 November, 2024.

“Around 1.10pm this afternoon, police received a report of a potential suspicious item at the bus station. Officers contacted the EOD and a controlled explosion was carried out. Nothing suspicious was found.

“As a precaution the bus station and surrounding buildings were evacuated.

“Three men were arrested in connection with possession of offensive weapons and enquiries are ongoing.

“Officers are working to return the area back to normal.”

A spokesperson for SPT, which operates the station, said: “Apologies all, Buchanan Bus Station is currently closed to passengers while police deal with an emergency incident,”

“There is no access to the station for passengers and no buses are entering or leaving the station.

“We will update you when station reopens. Apologies for the inconvenience.”
