3,000 new street lights are to be installed in Glasgow to replace end-of-life lamps.
Councillors signed off on a £14 million contract for the job, which will see bulbs replaced with LED lights.
Supplier Lightways (Contractors) Ltd has been appointed for the contract.
A meeting heard that the cable network will also be replaced alongside lighting columns.
A Glasgow City Council official said there will be “an upgrade to LED luminaires delivering an excess of 50 per cent energy savings and also improved reliability, compliance and reduced maintenance”.
A council paper presented to last week’s contracts and property committee said: “The proposed Light Network Renewal (LNR) contract involves the replacement of approximately 3,000 lighting columns, together with the associated overhead and underground cable network.”
It added: “The existing columns and cable network have now reached the end of their design life and require replacement to maintain safety, reliability, and performance.” Lightways Contractors was awarded the deal to fit the new lighting after a tender process, last week’s contracts and property committee heard.
The officer told the meeting: “Lightways Contractors achieved the highest score and is therefore recommended as the most economically advantageous tender.”
The LDRS reported earlier this year how 37,000 street light poles in Glasgow have reached the end of their expected life service, equivalent to nearly half of all lighting columns in the city.
