A teenager broke a man’s eye socket in a street attack outside an off-license in South Lanarkshire.

Drew Patterson pounced on John Thomson outside a One O One shop in Rutherglen on May 11, last year.

The 19-year-old first offender punched the 45-year-old victim before repeatedly kicking him on the ground leaving him with a shattered orbital bone and broken eye socket.

Patterson pled guilty to the assault at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Tuesday.

The court heard Patterson and another teenager were waiting outside the shop in the area’s main street when they got into a verbal altercation with Mr Thomson.

Prosecutor Amy Hunter said: “Patterson proceeded to punch Mr Thomson on the face and pulled him to the floor, then kicked him on the body before walking away.

“Patterson returned seconds later and kicked him to the head and made off.”

Mr Thomson was taken to hospital for treatment while Patterson was traced and arrested.

Ms Hunter added: “Mr Thomson had a cut on his head and neck.

“His right orbital bone close to his nose was broken and he had a broken eye socket.”

Sentence was deferred until next month for background reports by Sheriff Martin Jones QC.

Patterson, of the city’s Possilpark, was granted bail meantime.
