Teenage student dies after falling from hotel balcony in Ibiza

Tributes have been paid to former St John Ogilvie High School head girl Emma Ramsay following the fall in San Antonio.

Tributes have been paid to a 19-year-old Scottish student who has died after falling from a balcony in Ibiza.

Emma Ramsay, from Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, fell from the Hotel Vibra District in San Antonio in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

In the hours before her death, the teenager had posted videos and photos of her enjoying her holiday, saying she was “obsessed with this place”.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 3am but the Strathclyde University law student was pronounced dead.

A spokesperson for Vibra Hotels said Spanish police were investigating the death and conducting interviews.

The UK Foreign Office confirmed it was supporting Emma’s family.

Posting on Instagram, Emma’s mum Barbara Smith wrote: “My angel Emma I don’t even know where to begin. You are my daughter my best friend in the whole world and I am going to miss you more than words will ever express.

“Rest in peace my sweet angel and sleep tight mummy loves you so so much.”

The teenager’s former school St John Ogilvie High, where she was a head girl, said she was an “incredibly kind, hardworking, and talented pupil”.

Lorna Lawson, headteacher, said: “We are shocked and saddened at the heartbreaking news of the sudden passing of our former Head Girl Emma Ramsay.

“Emma was an incredibly kind, hardworking, bright and talented pupil who contributed a great deal to our school community.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Emma’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. Emma will be missed and will forever hold a special place in our school.”

Colette Watson, headteacher at St Mark’s Primary in Hamilton, said: “Emma was a lovely girl, caring and considerate and many of our staff have truly fond memories of her time with us.

“This is terribly sad news, and our thoughts, prayers and profound sympathies go out to Emma’s family and friends.”

Emma Ramsay shared a picture of herself at Ibiza on Tuesday night.

Emma was entering her second year of law studies at the University of Strathclyde.

A spokesperson for the university said: “Emma was a much-loved member of our student community and we are shocked and saddened by her death. Everyone at the University offers our deepest condolences to Emma’s family and all those affected by this terrible incident.

“Our wellbeing team is on hand to offer appropriate support to Emma’s classmates and the wider Strathclyde community at this difficult time.”

Monica Lennon, MSP for Central Scotland, said Emma’s death had “shocked the entire community”.

“My heart goes out to the family and friends of Emma Ramsay,” she said.

“Everyone is heartbroken and devastated. The Foreign Office is providing assistance to the family, who need privacy and the love of the entire community.”

Emma is the second Brit to have died after falling from a hotel in four days.

Reports say a 28-year-old man fell to his death in Mallorca on Saturday. He has not been named.

In response to the deaths of British tourists on holiday in the Balearic Islands, the British Consulates in Palma and Ibiza warned holidaymakers to “Stick With Your Mates”.

Investigations by the British Consulate in Palma found that the vast majority of serious incidents – many involving falls – took place when the individuals were on their own, having been separated from friends.

A UK Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.
