The incident occurred around 5pm on Saturday on the sand dunes at Irvine Beach Park and involved a group of youths.

A 15-year-old boy was taken to University Hospital Crosshouse in Kilmarnock following the attack, where he remains.

Police said enquiries were ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

“The beach has been very busy this weekend and I would ask any witnesses who were in the area at the time, or anyone with information about the incident, to please get in touch.

“Additional officers are carrying out patrols to provide reassurance as people gather to enjoy the nice weather.”
