A teenage motocross rider has died during a race held in the Scottish Borders.

Jude Morris from Corfe Castle in Dorset was taking part in the first MXY2 race in the British Motocross Championships held in Duns on Saturday when the crash occurred.

Emergency services attended the event around 11am, however the 17-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received report of a one-vehicle crash at Duns Motocross around 11.05am on Saturday, 28 August, 2021.

“Emergency services attended and a 17-year-old male was pronounced dead at the scene.”

A statement on the Auto Cycle Union (ACU) Facebook page said the teenager was “one of the leading youth riders within the UK and had the potential to be a future adult British Champion”.

Steve McCauley, race director and chairman of the ACU Motocross Committee, said: “An incredibly sad day for everyone.

“Jude was always smiling and lived for competing in Motocross.  An extremely talented young lad, he was one of the most dedicated and hard-working young riders I have ever had the pleasure to meet.

“At this very sad time our thoughts are with Jude’s parents Mark and Lucy and their family”.
