Two Celtic fans – including a 19-year-old – were injured after being allegedly attacked by a gang in Zagreb as a warning was issued to supporters travelling to the city.
Police in the Croatian capital conducted an investigation into six minors on suspicion that they, as part of a group, attacked and attempted to rob a 38-year-old Scottish man.
The incident, which saw the man taken to the Sisters of Charity Hospital to be treated for serious injuries, took place around 10.45pm on Sunday night.
Police said the man had left a restaurant on Opatovina Street in the city centre when he was approached by a group who demanded he hand over his phone and money.
He refused and was said to be “threatened with death” before running away and being chased by the suspects.
Police said he was kicked, punched and, with a currently unknown sharp object, suffered an injury to his hand.
Officers also linked the incident to another assault of a British man – a 19-year-old – half an hour earlier the same evening when three members of the same group were allegedly involved.
It is believed the suspects ran up to the man in Gajeva Street and “without any reason began hitting him in the head with their hands”.
He suffered slight injuries, according to police.
Following investigations, the suspects were handed over to the detention supervisor and a special report was submitted to the Municipal Criminal State Attorney’s Office for Juveniles in Zagreb.
In a statement released on Monday, Celtic said they were aware of a number of incidents where fans had been targeted in the city.
A club statement read: “We are currently looking to liaise with these fans who have been affected and we will offer all the support and assistance we can.
“Clearly, we would ask all our supporters travelling to be vigilant.”
Brendan Rodgers side face Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday evening on match day six of their Champions League campaign.
