Officers were called to a report of a man found injured in the West Blackhall Street area around 12.10am on Saturday, September 28.
He was taken to hospital for treatment following the incident.
A 53-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident, which is being treated as attempted murder.
A police presence remains at the scene.
A Police Scotland statement read: “A 53-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an attempted murder in Greenock.
“Around 12.10am on Saturday, September 28, 2024, officers were called to a report of a 21-year-old man found injured in the West Blackhall Street area.
“He was taken to hospital for treatment. Enquiries are ongoing.”
