Storm Eowyn: ScotRail suspends all train services after red weather warning issued by Met Office

ScotRail has announced it will suspend all its services as Storm Eowyn brings dangerous strong winds.

It comes after the Met Office issued a red warning for Friday, forecasting “flying debris resulting in danger to life”.

People have been urged to stay at home under what has been described as “exceptional circumstances” by STV meteorologist Sean Batty.

The Met Office issued a red weather warning for Friday as very strong winds are expected to disrupt the country.

ScotRail confirmed that no services will operate on Friday as the extreme weather arrives.

The rail operator said it would not be safe to operate passenger services across Scotland due to the conditions.

“Customers are being strongly advised not to travel, as there will be no train services, and no alternative transport will be available,” a spokesperson said.

It follows a further review of the weather forecasts, which shows that the conditions will be much worse in many areas than earlier forecasts had predicted.

The Met Office issued the most severe possible warning for Friday between 10am and 5pm, forecasting “flying debris resulting in danger to life”.

Storm Eowyn is the fifth named storm of the season after Storm Darragh brought strong winds and snow to parts of the UK in December.

The incoming warning has affected Other rail services, with Transpennine Express urging customers not to travel to Scotland, York, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Manchester on Friday.

Police have also urged motorists to avoid unnecessary journeys and to delay travel plans until conditions improve.
