Stiliyan Petrov says son is his 'own man' after announcing Reform UK candidacy

Stiliyan Jnr will be standing for election to the Lapworth and West Kenilworth council.

Celtic legend Stiliyan Petrov said his son is his “own man” after it was announced he would be running as a candidate for Nigel Farage’s Reform UK.

Last Wednesday, the party revealed that Stiliyan Jnr will be standing for election to the Lapworth and West Kenilworth council.

Reform UK made the announcement on X, stating: “Meet Stiliyan Petrov, our candidate for Lapworth & West Kenilworth. He’s ready to fix his local area by cutting wasteful spending, lowering council tax and ensuring proper funding for key public services.”

A promotional video was also shared showing the Glasgow-born candidate doing keep-ups and working as an electrician.

Stiliyan Jnr said he is standing to give the “working class people and the youth of this country” a voice but is not looking to become a “career politician”.

Bulgarian international Petrov Snr, who made 300 appearances for Celtic, revealed that he never had an interest in politics, however, the Hoops legend said his son “will draw his own path in life”.

Ahead of Celtic’s Scottish Cup semi-final clash with St Johnstone the former midfielder said: “My son is passionate about the world and I’ve encouraged that strongly even though we haven’t agreed in certain cases, he’s his own man.

“He is independent and a young individual who works hard and is happy to help the community. He’s a young man who will draw his own path in life.

“With the young kids now they’ve got their own choices.”
