Six people have been charged after a police officers were allegedly attacked in Glasgow city centre over the weekend.

A number of arrests were made over the weekend in relation to a variety of offences, including assault, racially aggravated breach of the peace, drugs supply, possession of offensive weapons, an attempted wilful fire-raising and breach of a City Centre Exclusion Order.

Three men, aged 34, 35 and 40, were due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court in connection with attacking a police officer.

Two other men, aged 38 and 43, were the subject of reports to the Procurator Fiscal.

A teenage female was also issued with a Recorded Police Warning.

Chief Inspector Stephen McManus, local Area Commander, said: “Assaults on our officers are absolutely unacceptable. They have the fundamental right to come home from each shift unharmed.

“It is not part of the job, and it is important we report any violence against emergency service workers and hold those responsible to account.

“The safety and well-being of our officers are priorities for Police Scotland. We have seen significant investment in operational safety training, the introduction of body worn video and officers equipped with Tasers, in a bid to reduce the risk of violence towards police.

“We will continue to provide a visible and proactive police presence in Glasgow city centre to tackle violence, disorder, anti-social behaviour and drugs activity and would encourage anyone with information or concerns to approach officers out on patrol or contact us on 101.”
