A potential sinkhole under one of Glasgow city centre’s busiest streets is to bring further disruption amid ongoing sewer repair.
Scottish Water is currently carrying out works on Hope Street between Bath Street and West Regent Street, with traffic reduced to one lane.
During the course of the work, teams came across a void underneath the road at its junction with West Regent Street.
A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “There is the real chance of a sinkhole opening which would have been extremely hazardous to road users if left unattended.
“Glasgow City Council has granted us emergency permission to extend the scope of our current traffic management to allow the void to be repaired safely.”
Hope Street is still reduced to one lane, however there is no left turn from West Regent Street north onto Hope Street, and no right turn from Hope Street east onto West Regent Street.
Local businesses are open as usual.
A Scottish Water spokesperson added: “We can only apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but it is the only way to carry out the repair keeping pedestrians, road users and our teams, safe.
“Everything is being done to complete the necessary repairs as quickly as possible, and we would like to thank everyone affected for the patience and understanding.”
