Rail services were badly disrupted after a signal failure on one of the busiest nights of the year.

Trains between Ayrshire and Glasgow were cancelled after a signalling fault on the southside of the city.

Train operator ScotRail said it was expecting the disruption to continue until 11pm

Network Rail said engineers had been dispatched to deal with the issue.

A signalling fault between Muirhouse North junction and Busby junction meant Christmas travellers faced disruption on one of busiest nights of the year.

It caused the suspension of services between Glasgow Central and Kilmarnock with replacement bus services introduced between Glasgow and parts of Ayrshire.

The signal fault also affected services between Glasgow Central and East Kilbride/Kilmarnock/Barrhead/Cathcart Circles/Newton and Neilston which were also suspended.

The rail operator warned train services could not be guaranteed.

A spokesman for National Rail Enquiries said: "ScotRail are advising passengers that there is no guarantee of travel on affected lines and that they should consider making their own arrangements."
