Shawlands church could be knocked down to make way for new flats LDRS

A church in Shawlands could be knocked down to make way for new flats.

Glasgow City Council has received an application to demolish the United Free Church of Scotland on Millwood Street.

The developers, Crolpia Ltd, want to replace the building with 15 homes across a four and five-storey block.

Currently, the site includes the main church building and an attached hall. Plans state: “To facilitate this development, the existing structures on the site would be demolished and the site cleared, including the vegetation.

“It is proposed that a specialist conservation demolition contractor will take the halls down and re-use all usable stonework, timbers, slate etc.”

The church building and hall were developed between the 1910s and 1930s an open land to the rear of tenement which fronts onto Kilmarnock Road, according to the application.

If the demolition plan is approved, the new development would include 13 two-bedroom flats and two two-bedroom maisonettes.

There would also be a communal roof garden, a ground floor garden area with drying space, bin storage and enclosed cycle parking. No car parking spaces are proposed.

The proposals adds the plan “continues the u-shape of the tenement block down Millwood Street and round onto Deanston Drive”.

The council received the application last month and is expected to make a decision by April 1.
