Sewage leaking into water after waste water pipe bursts in East Kilbride

Scottish Water are urgently dealing with a burst sewage pipe at a wastewater treatment works in East Kilbride.

Staff are assessing the full extent of repairs needed to the pipe which has spilled sewage into the nearby Kittoch Water near to the National Museum of Rural Life.

Scottish Water said that mitigation measures have been put in place to reduce the environmental impact.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We are currently dealing with an issue near to Phillipshill Waste Water Treatment Works in East Kilbride, close to The National Museum of Rural Life. We are working to establish the full circumstances, assessing the full extent of repairs needed to our waste water infrastructure in the area.

“It would appear that a sewer pipeline has collapsed in the field near to our treatment works and this has resulted in a spillage of flows to the nearby Kittoch Water. We are working as quickly and as safely as we can in challenging terrain. Mitigation measures have been put in place to help reduce any environmental impact and we are currently establishing what more can be done. We continue to liaise with The Scottish Environment Protection Agency.”

A spokesperson for SEPA said: “We are investigating an ongoing significant sewage pollution incident on the Kittoch Water. The result of a partial blockage in the sewer network, Scottish Water are required to take urgent action. Temporary measures are expected to be in place on Wednesday October 18 to stop the discharge.”
