Several people had to be evacuated from high-rise flats in Glasgow as firefighters tackled a blaze on the top floor.

Nearby roads were closed as the Scottish Fire and Rescue service dealt with the incident at Helenvale Flats near Celtic Park in the city’s east end.

One man was treated for smoke inhalation by the Scottish Ambulance Service.

London Road was closed to all traffic from Springfield Cross to Macbeth Street as a result of the fire.

Helenvale Street was closed between London Road and Tollcross Road.

Police advised road users to avoid the area.

A spokesman for the force said: “At around 1.05pm on Sunday police and fire service attended a report of fire within a top floor flat in Helenvale Street, Glasgow.

“A number of people have been evacuated from the flats and the fire has now been extinguished by SFRS.

“One man is currently being treated by SAS for smoke inhalation.

“Enquiries will be carried out to establish the circumstances surrounding the fire.”
