Seven arrested during 12-hour crackdown on crime in Glasgow city centre

Seven people have been arrested as part of a police crackdown on violence and anti-social behaviour in Glasgow city centre.

Officers carried out the proactive action between 2.20pm on Tuesday and 2.20am on Wednesday, with arrests made for assault with intent to rob and possession of a knife.

Police Scotland said it is focused on “ensuring Glasgow city centre is a safe and welcoming place for everyone”.

During the 12 hours of action, two men, aged 34 and 37 were arrested and charged in connection with assault and possession of an offensive weapon and a 40-year-old woman was also arrested and charged in connection with assault and intent to rob.

All three are due to appear before Glasgow Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

A man, aged 41 and a woman, aged 49, were arrested and charged in connection with possession of a knife.

A 32-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with possession of offensive weapons and a 20-year-old man was arrested in connection with a breach of the peace and resisting arrest.

All were released on an undertaking to appear before Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.

Chief inspector Stephen McManus, local area commander, said: “These arrests send a clear message that violence, disorder and anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated in Glasgow City Centre.

“This criminality can cause real harm and unease for local residents, businesses and those visiting our city and we remain committed to providing a visible police presence.

“Anyone intent on carrying weapons or engaging in criminal behaviour should be in no doubt that we will continue to have dedicated officers in the area to detect and disrupt your activities, and you will be arrested.

“Our focus is on ensuring Glasgow City Centre is a safe and welcoming place for everyone and we’d encourage anyone with information or concerns to please approach officers out on patrol or contact us on 101.”
