Second man charged with murder of Rutherglen man after 'mass disturbance' on street

A second man has appeared in court charged with murder after the death of another man during a disturbance in Rutherglen.

Stuart McGeachie was assaulted outside a premises on Farmeloan Road, at its junction with Victoria Street, on the evening of Tuesday, October 24.

The 38-year-old made his way to a nearby flat where he was pronounced dead by emergency services.

A murder probe was launched into the incident said to have involved several people led by Police Scotland’s Major Investigation Team.

A 22-year-old man was arrested in connection on Tuesday and appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Friday.

Craig McColl was charged with assault, two counts of carrying offensive weapons and murder.

He made no plea, was committed for further examination and remanded in custody.

A 54-year-old man also appeared at the same court on Friday charged with assault.

Hugh McColl made no plea, was committed for further examination and released on bail.

It comes after a third man, Callum David Cummins Summers, appeared in court on Monday charged with assault, two counts of carrying offensive weapons and murder.

He made no plea, was committed for further examination and remanded in custody.

Previously, detective chief inspector John Morrison said: “Our thoughts remain with Stuart’s family and friends at this very difficult time.

“We have a dedicated team of officers working on this investigation and I would like to reassure the local community that everything is being done to trace those responsible.

“Extensive enquiries are ongoing and officers are continuing to gather CCTV footage from the surrounding area.”

Investigators closed off the area for more than 24 hours while an initial probe was carried out, eventually reopening the road at around 9.15pm the following day.

DCI Morrison said a visible police presence would remain in the area in the immediate future.

He encouraged anyone who may have information on the incident to come forward and share it with officers.

“Stuart’s family are absolutely devastated and it’s imperative that we get them answers about his death,” he said.

“I am appealing to anyone who may have seen a group of youths in dark clothing on bikes or scooters throughout the day on Farmeloan Road and Main Street, to get in touch as they may have vital information about the incident.

“I would also ask the group themselves to come forward as they may have seen or heard something, which could help with our enquiries.”

DCI Morrison added: “I’d like to thank the public for their assistance so far and would again ask anyone with information, who hasn’t already spoken with officers, to contact us.

“We will have a continued police presence in the area and I would like to thank the local community for their cooperation.

“Anyone with any concerns can approach these officers.”
