High-profile Scottish gang leader Steven Lyons has been extradited after being arrested in Indonesia.

Indonesian authorities on Wednesday extradited the 45-year-old after his removal was delayed multiple times as police pursued an ongoing investigation, officials said.

He is believed to be the head of the notorious Lyons crime family based in Glasgow, which detectives say has played a significant role in the funnelling of drugs into Scotland, money laundering and outbursts of violence throughout Europe.

Lyons has been wanted by Spanish authorities in connection with a murder in 2024.

Investigators believe Lyons was travelling to Indonesia in an effort to set up a drug supply network in the region; however, he was intercepted at Bali’s Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport by immigration officers on Saturday, March 28.

Just days after the Indonesian arrest, his partner Amanda Lyons, was arrested by Dubai police in the UAE.

STV News understands neither Amanda or Steven Lyons will be deported to Scotland and that the operation has been led by Spanish authorities.

Lyons investigation timeline
  • March 27 – Homes in Scotland and Spain raided as part of joint gang-busting operation
  • March 28 – Steven Lyons arrested on arrival in Bali after being flagged by a Spanish Interpol Red Notice
  • March 30 – Lyons’ partner Amanda Lyons arrested by police in Dubai, authorities say
  • March 31 – Indonesian police reveal they are hunting two Scottish gangsters who arrived with Lyons
  • April 1 – Lyons’ deportation to Spain is delayed
  • April 8 – Indonesian authorities deport Lyons putting him on a flight to Amsterdam

Lyons was flown from Indonesia to Amsterdam early on Wednesday morning, said Husnan Handano, a spokesperson for the island of Bali’s immigration office.

From there, he was to be transferred onward to Spain to face charges related to drug trafficking and money laundering, Mr Handano said.

Bali police chief Daniel Adityajaya said Lyons’ arrest was part of a joint investigation involving Indonesian, Spanish and Scottish authorities.

Authorities also suspect the group laundered money through shell companies across Europe and the Middle East, including in Spain, Scotland, England, Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain and Turkey.

Prior to his arrest in Bali, police in Scotland and Spain carried out raids linked to the investigation that resulted in multiple arrests.

Additional suspects were detained in Turkey, the Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates.

Lyons arrived in Bali with two companions who are believed to be still on the island, although Lyons told authorities he travelled alone, said Bugie Kurniawan, head of the Bali immigration office.

He said Spain’s Interpol has identified them as members of the same criminal cartel, but they are not the targets of any arrest warrants or Interpol Red Notices.

Bali Police spokesperson Ari Sandy refused to comment on the investigation.
